Work based learning

To start my work based learning I went and participated at Work House Marketing with a man named Andrew Woodhead, he was the photographer at this company.

What this company entails is -

Businesses today need creativity to distinguish themselves from the competition – as a full service marketing agency, we can deliver strategies and campaigns that will give them that edge.

I worked along side Andrew for a couple of days, he showed me many things that will help me in my own career.

On the first day I was introduced to most of the staff, they made me feel very comfortable, they worked more like a family which made it easier to learn and get on with things.

Andrew showed me his studio which is very impressive, we had all visited this studio with university as Richard wanted to show us what great things they where doing. So to start off with Andrew showed me what kind of things he was expected to do. He would parcels delivered there through out they day which would consist on products that different clients would want him to photograph. The first one being paintbrushes, Andy showed me several ways in how to light them up, how do get the best depth of field and how to position them correct before actually taking the photograph. Once he had shown me how he was doing these he let me have many go's at taking the photographs. After the paintbrushes he also photographed clothes, beer and kitchen tiles. Each item was very different, the clothes had to be perfectly folded in a certain way, the beer bottles had to all be polished and pointing in the same direction and the tiles had to be position in a certain way so they looked pure white but so you could also see the pattern on them.

Once the photographs had been taken we would go back across to the main building where Andy would show me how he would edit them, once he had done this he would then email them to the manager up stairs and she would say whether they where good enough or he would have to go and photograph them again.

I learnt many things while going there, the main one being that you have to have a lot of time and patience to photograph products for so many different clients.

I wanted to also experience what it was like to work with people so I handed out some business cards and within a week I had a wedding booked, I had never photographed a wedding before so at first it felt a bit daunting but I did a lot of research and also went and spoke to a local photographer to ask for some pointers and tips. He told me to make everyone feel comfortable and to be as prepared as a could be.

I made several meetings with the bride and groom before the wedding to discuss what photographs they wanted and what kind of album there where after and of course the matter of how much I would be charging them.

On the day I was there for 7am, this is where I photographed the bride and her bridesmaids getting ready, this was quite laid back,

I then went down and photographed the rooms that were being used as part of their wedding,

Then I went on to photograph them getting married and photographing everyone afterwards,

Overall the day went really well, everything happened on time and the bride made it down the isle, working with quite a few people on your own is very demanding, everyone always wants something different, each person will ask a different question which you want to answer in a professional manner. Also when you are taking the photographs of everyone outside afterwards could at times be very difficult as each person would be looking at someone else's camera but you have to stay calm and just be straight and tell them what to do, because at the end of the day the new couple have paid me to do a good job.

This wedding was at Rose Hill Hotel in Burnley for Mr and Mrs Gibson.

I could not say if product photographer was easier than wedding photography as both types have different outcomes and different processes to go through, it all depends on what type of photography you enjoy doing because the more you enjoy it the easier it will be for you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I enjoyed going to Workhouse Marketing and learning many different things, how to use correct lighting in a studio, how to work to a clients brief, how to position the product to show its best potential and also have to use Photoshop with more confidence. I also learnt many things while photographing the wedding, like how to stay calm in a stressful situation, communication with a mass of people, working to a couples thoughts and ideas, taking more photographs than you usually would just to make sure you have that perfect shot.

I have learnt many things throughout my work based learning, some things I have found more interesting and helpful than others but all in all it has been very successful as I feel like I could go and do both things again with more confidence.
